What role can artists play in shaping more democratic, inclusive and sustainable societies?
Artistic Citizenship & Leadership is a five-day intensive course bringing together 20+ BA and MA students from music academies across the Nordic-Baltic region for a week of creativity, collaboration and leadership in Malmö, Sweden. The course is organized by the Malmö Academy of Music, Lund University, as part of the newly established Nordplus network Artists as Leaders – NEXT75. The course offers 3 ECTS and is open to BA and MA students from different musical genres, disciplines and specializations.

About the course
How can artistic practice connect with social engagement, democratic participation and
leadership? During the week, you will explore questions around
o artistic citizenship and artistic leadership
o democracy and participation in higher music education
o power relations and student agency
o socially engaged artistic practice
o collaborative leadership
o project development and teamwork
o the role of artists in society
This course combines interactive workshops, discussions, embodied and body-mapping
exercises, artistic collaboration, project development and creative storytelling. Students will
work in international groups and develop artistic projects together with teachers and
mentors. The week will culminate in a public event combining performances, presentations and dialogue which will give the opportunity to share students’ ideas with a wider audience.

Who can apply?
The course is open to BA and MA students from all musical genres, artistic disciplines and specializations. We particularly encourage applications representing the diversity of the Nordic-Baltic higher music education community – across countries, institutions, artistic backgrounds, genres and perspectives.

Each participating institution may nominate up to three students.
As the course has 20+ available student places, a final selection may be necessary if the number of nominations exceeds the available places.

Practical Information
Students are expected to participate in all five days of the course. Travel and accommodation will be covered by the Nordplus project. Information about travel arrangements, accommodation and the detailed program will be shared with selected participants.

Beyond the week in Malmö
The course is designed to build connections, spark new ideas, and create opportunities that continue beyond the intensive week. Student experiences, artistic projects, and course
outcomes will be shared through the wider NEXT75 network, including at the ANMA Annual Meeting and NEXT Conference in April 2027, as well as through EPASA channels and European networks such as AEC, EMC, and ELIA. Students will also be invited to take part in the ANMA Forum and NEXT Conference in April 2027.
